Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an plans to take his family on a ride on the newly renovated Maokong Gondola during the Lunar New Year holidays to visit the zoo. The Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC) plans to recruit over 100 new talents, including maintenance technicians, engineers, and professionals in various fields. Generous offers include a monthly salary of up to NT$48,000 for electrical and signal maintenance technicians. The corporation provides comprehensive employee benefits, such as allowances and subsidies for food, clothing, accommodation, transportation, education, and entertainment. Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified two batches of Japanese strawberries as non-compliant due to pesticide residue issues. The strawberries, imported from Fukuoka and Tochigi, failed to pass border inspections and will now undergo 100 percent batch inspection. Out of the 1,084 batches of Japanese strawberries inspected this year, 19 were found to be non-compliant, accounting for a rate of 1.75 percent. Taipei-based subsidiary Family International Gourmet, a part of Taiwan FamilyMart Co., Ltd, has announced plans to increase salaries by 3-5% in 2024. The company will also offer incentive and performance bonuses equivalent to three to eight months of annual pay. Outstanding employees in 2023 could potentially earn annual salaries equivalent to over 20 months, with some store managers already earning millions of dollars per year. The company plans to expand by opening 8-12 new stores annually. In 2024, they aim to hire over 500 regular employees, including 50 potential store managers and over 200 potential supervisors. Starting salaries for new employees will increase from NT$34,000 to NT$36,000, with reserve cadres earning NT$40,000. Employees who pass training assessments can quickly advance to store manager roles, with the opportunity to earn annual salaries exceeding NT$1 million. The company reported impressive revenues of NT$19.92 billion in November, a nearly 30% increase year-on-year. Family International Gourmet is set to debut on the emerging stock market this Thursday as it progresses towards listing on the over-the-counter market.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) has announced that conscripted soldiers who fail to pass their basic training will receive a base salary of approximately NT$10,000, without eligibility for professional bonuses or honor leave. The new one-year mandatory service, starting in January 2024, requires conscripts to undergo 8 weeks of basic training followed by 44 weeks of unit training. The basic training curriculum includes combat instruction, tactical marching, and battlefield medical aid courses. Only those who pass the basic training and obtain the ＂Completion of Training Specialty Certificate＂ will qualify for an additional monthly professional bonus of NT$10,190, bringing their total monthly salary to NT$20,320. To ensure training effectiveness, the MND has also issued guidelines for supplementary training and re-tests for conscripts who fail to meet the standards.

The Minister of Labor, Hsu Ming-chun, expressed hope that the draft for the national minimum wage bill will soon pass its final hurdle. The Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan has decided to lower the entry standards for the national examination for nursing personnel in order to address staff shortages. The Minister of Health and Welfare, Hsueh Jui-yuan, expressed his uncertainty about the reasons for nurses’ dissatisfaction with the announcement. The goal of this policy change is to enhance the pass rate in the national examinations and boost the nursing workforce. However, the National Taiwan University Hospital Union argues that the real issue lies in the lack of conducive workplace environments to retain nurses, rather than the number of nursing licenses. They believe that both ministries have failed to adequately discuss the policy change and provide comprehensive explanations and support measures. The union urges hospital management to improve the workplace environment to better handle staffing predicaments.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) predicts stable weather conditions across Taiwan, with mostly cloudy to clear skies for the first half of Friday (Nov.10). However, a weather front is expected to pass through in the afternoon, bringing isolated heavy rain to the north coast of Keelung and mountainous areas of northern Taiwan. Meteorologist Wu Te-jung estimates that the island will experience sharp temperature drops due to the arrival of its first wave of continental air mass starting next Monday, with the country’s plain areas forecasted to drop below 15 degrees Celsius at their lowest. In the morning hours of Wednesday and Thursday, as northeast winds weaken, there will be a slight improvement in weather and a brief rise in temperature. However, the east of Taiwan can expect brief showers during this time. With continental highs hanging over the island, most regions across Taiwan are forecasted to remain relatively stable next Friday. Wu also foresees slight chills brought on by the effects of Taiwan’s first projected wave of cold air mass, offsetting daytime warmth, as ＂radiative cooling＂ (RC) causes bodies to lose heat at night.

Taiwan’s Minister of Defense, Chiu Kuo-cheng, has taken action in response to reports of leaked military equipment from Taiwan’s Marine Corps. He held high-ranking military officers accountable and emphasized that lower-ranking personnel should not bear the brunt of the fallout. Chiu was summoned to report to the Legislative Yuan’s Foreign and National Defense Committee, where he admitted problems within troop management but also pointed out that blame should not solely rest on lower-ranking officers. The Ministry of National Defense has traced the problems to the brigade and command levels, indicating a weakness in senior management. Chiu stressed that senior officials should accept responsibility for training and not pass off their problems to subordinates. Commanding officers are also being held accountable in these cases.

Premier Chen Chien-jen urged Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan on Wednesday (July 19) to pass the United States-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade, after the U.S. Senate passed the trade agreement unanimously a day earlier.
